A COUNCILMAN'S START

THE PATH TO THE ARENA is bleak with simplicity. a single hall, spick and span, without even the slightest hint of decor. the entire building oozes with a minimalistic mindset. what little there is serves a function. nothing is wasted.

the arena itself is a standardized battlefield. it should be strikingly familiar to someone who has four badges.

an electronic voice welcomes the challenger over the p.a. system.

“welcome to the battle frontier! today’s challenge will be a standard two versus two double battle.”

the mechanical sound of moving parts reverberate from above as the ceiling tiles come apart. an odd appliance resembling a pitching machine descends from the hole, stopping at a certain height, before aiming at one side of the field.

two pokeballs are launched.

“the rules for this challenge are as follows: each trainer will use two pokemon at a time until both are unable to battle.”

past challengers will recognize fernando’s aegislash by it’s poise and natural spin. the starmie beside it is often overshadowed but by no means a stranger. together, the pokemon spin in place, idle until the voice announces the battle to start.

THE AGGRON MEETS NO INTERFERENCE. instead, fernando’s prerecorded voice cuts into the audio above. his infamous line, “battle routine sets,” perks his pokemon into alertness.

“execute!”

the CLANGING SCALES soar across the field. at a distance, the starmie is able to read the move and evade it, already in motion. it deftly avoids the attack with a pivotal spiral upwards as it soars closer to the gym’s ceiling.

belows, the aegislash points the tip of its blade toward the aggron, honing in before launching itself like a missile with its IRON HEAD.

CLINK! the IRON HEAD strikes the PROTECTIVE barrier but it fails to pierce through. just like the dome that promises their doom, none will find any quarter from the aggron’s barricade. it is unyielding. steadfast.

which leaves the aegislash vulnerable for a deft counter attack. the kommo-o has no trouble sneaking in its THUNDER PUNCH, coating the pokemon in a burst of static discharge. sparks coarse along the swords metal surface, dancing bolts of stings and pains.

in the opposite direction, the aegislash spins for a wide-arc slash of SACRED SWORD. like a muscle contracting at the pinnacle of a heavy lift, it almost bounces with sudden energy, desperate to deload this momentum with a retaliatory swipe.

from a higher vantage point, the starmie observes. its gem sparkles a myriad of colors before firing an AURORA BEAM toward the kommo-o’s last spot.

ANOTHER BARRIER BLOCKS aegislas’s attack and it responds in kind with another swipe. SCARED SWORD glows brighter with every slash, stored like unexpended kinetic energy, hungry for release.

above, the ROCK SLIDE buffets the starmie as it tries to navigate the myriad of projectiles. like a star ship lost in an asteroid field, swift spins allow it to circumvent some but their sheer numbers makes the pokemon beaten back by some. it starts to fall when struck, resorting to using its PSYCHIC powers to launch several back at the duo.

THE SOUND OF SCALED KNUCKLES REBOUNDING OFF SOLID STEEL is overshadowed by the crackling whip of an electric discharge. the clang of exchanging blows exaggerate the damage dealt both ways. as this slugfest descends into even exchanges, damage accumulates with neither side showing any signs of slowing down. it is when they expend their stamina and their tanks run empty that victors are decided.

sure as when the THUNDER PUNCH lands, the aegislash whirls again once more in an AERIAL ACE to deal a retaliatory swing of its sharpened side. the way it arcs would return it to an upright positions regardless of whether the strike lands.


behind them, the bombardment of ROCK SLIDE finally corners the starmie onto the ground floor. as boulders break apart, some striking true, the carpeting makes taking an aerial stance too problematic. grounded, the pokemon aims one of its many limbs toward the aggron, firing an AURORA BEAM precisely through the gaps of still oncoming projectiles.

THE AEGISLASH CANNOT STOP THE KOMMO-O FROM BREAKING THROUGH. the sudden burst of speed allows the dragon to slip past as the starmie tries to back off. even so, the pokemon cannot escape the approaching aggressor. the most it can do is have its core gem blink several times as it anticipates an attack.

“hyuk!”

as the THUNDER PUNCH comes through, the starmie sudden swaps places with ALLY SWITCH. in its place is the same aegislash the kommo-o tried to evade, propped up and blocking the blow with its KING’S SHIELD.

A ONE-TWO THUNDER PUNCH is enough to catch the aegislash off guard as it transitions back into its BLADE FORM. however, striking the KING’S SHIELD has dulled the pokemon’s power. this time, the aegislash bears through the blow with little difficultly, unfazed as it swipes with a horizontal AERIAL ACE.

as those two continue their bout, elinor’s MEGA EVOLUTION causes the starmie to blink. it predicts the worst, trying to gather its COSMIC POWER in the face of something unknown. unacquainted with aggron’s particular mega evolution, the pokemon is caught unprepared for the empowered ROCK SLIDE. while it dodges the first one, their sheer numbers quickly bury the pokemon underneath a small tomb.
